Magic Eden's Badged Collections: Ensuring Authenticity and Safety

Discover how the badge system on Magic Eden guarantees genuine and secure collections for all users.

Updated over a week ago

At Magic Eden, our goal is to offer the most extensive collection of items on our marketplace. We believe in providing a diverse selection to cater to all our users, whether they are whales, degens, or normies. We want Magic Eden to be the ultimate destination for discovering, expressing, and owning digital treasures from various cultures.

However, we also prioritize trust and safety for our community. To ensure a secure environment, we now grant a badge to collections listed on our marketplace. This badge signifies that a collection is authentic, significant, and in good standing. Please note that the badge does not imply an endorsement or recommendation from Magic Eden.

In our continuous efforts to maintain a safe platform, we will soon implement AI and machine learning technology to detect and remove any copymints and collections containing offensive, violent, vulgar, or hateful content. By combining this technology with our badging system, we aim to transition to a fully open listings model while ensuring the utmost safety for all our users.

What does the badge signify?

Authenticity

The badge serves as a signal that a collection is genuine and legitimate. To the best of our knowledge and based on our thorough assessment, these badged collections are not duplicates, copies, or unauthorized appropriations of assets from another collection. Much like a certificate of authenticity for art pieces, the badge enables users to distinguish between originals and deceptive fakes, aiming to mislead buyers into believing they are purchasing "the real thing."

Significance

Collections that have demonstrated strong performance or have piqued significant interest are prone to attracting scams, parodies, and other misrepresentations. Therefore, only collections that have surpassed a total sales volume of 5,000 SOL (placing them among the top ~5% of listed collections on the marketplace), meet the Launchpad criteria, or enjoy backing from notable and publicly recognized project founders, artists, or teams will be eligible to apply for badging.

Being in good standing

Considering the vast number of collections and the challenge of identifying legitimate ones, we will exclusively badge collections that do not exhibit typical and evident signs of being scams or carrying rug risks. The indicators we will consider include the community's size relative to the supply, the level of activity and quality of engagement within their community, and signs of questionable practices, such as the use of bots to inflate their social media following, market manipulation, and artificial inflation of sales volume.

Not an endorsement

The badge in no way represents Magic Eden's views or opinion about the collection, the team behind it, and their ability to execute on the project's roadmap. Neither does the badge comment on the originality or quality of a collection’s artwork. Finally, the badge does not constitute a recommendation to buy, nor does it intend to bestow prestige on the collection.

Three ways to get badged

Volume Threshold Application:

Solana

  • On Solana, collections that achieve sales of at least 5,000 SOL can apply for badging.

  • Collections from a single creator will be considered for badging if at least one of their collections exceeds a trading volume of 5,000 SOL.

  • The volume threshold may be periodically reviewed and adjusted over time.

Polygon

  • On Polygon, collections that achieve sales of at least 50,000 MATIC can apply for badging.

  • Collections from a single creator will be considered for badging if at least one of their collections exceeds a trading volume of 50,000 MATIC.

  • The volume threshold will also be revisited periodically.

Supporting Documentation:

Projects with notable and publicly recognized founders, artists, or team members can submit supporting documents along with their application. These documents may include:

  • Coverage or multiple mentions in widely recognized and reputable publications.

  • Evidence of verification on specialized marketplaces and major social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram.

Launching on ME Launchpad:

  • Collections that pass the internal vetting standards and have clear provenance of the mints are selected for ME Launchpad.

  • ME Launchpad collections are automatically badged upon launch, as they have a high level of authenticity and confidence.

Can so-called derivatives receive the badge?

There's no clear-cut solution here. On the one hand, the badge is meant to signal authenticity, which could imply that derivatives, remixes, mashups, spinoffs, fan art, and homages are automatically considered inauthentic since they heavily borrow from another (usually badged) collection. On the other hand, it is incredibly challenging to determine what is truly original and what is derivative. Magic Eden aims to protect creators and users without assuming the role of a judge, critic, or art historian.

Collections that some consider "derivatives" can still achieve high trading volumes, maintain a strong floor price over a long period, and build a large and passionate fan base. Such collections have a relatively higher chance of being badged after careful consideration.

However, certain "derivatives" may only capitalize on recent trends without offering much value to the holder beyond the art or branding elements inspired by a "blue chip" or a recent hot mint. In such cases, we may choose not to badge them, encouraging inexperienced collectors to conduct further research.

Regardless, we are committed to adopting a more rigorous approach in reviewing these types of collections. These reviews will take a longer time and might lead to a revision of our badging criteria to ensure we adapt to ever-changing norms and community expectations.

How can creators apply for the badge?

Solana

If your collection meets the eligibility criteria mentioned above, you can apply for the badge through the 1-click application process in the Creator Hub. Once you submit your application, a review process will be initiated. You can expect to receive an acknowledgement from us within 2 days and a final outcome in 4-5 days in most cases.

Polygon

For Polygon collections: Badges are manually awarded by the operations team at Magic Eden to known projects that meet the threshold. Currently, this process is at the discretion of the Magic Eden team. If you wish to apply for the badge for your Polygon collection, please use this form.

How can collections lose the badge?

Magic Eden reserves the right to badge or remove badges from collections at its sole discretion and may do so without prior notice. Below are some example scenarios that may trigger a review leading to the removal of a collection’s badging status:

  • Breach of Magic Eden’s Terms of Service.

  • Reports of team or roadmap abandonment, or any suggestion that the project is a confirmed rug, which is usually marked by the deletion of social media accounts, long periods of team inactivity, or credible reports from reputable sources. (Note: After a badge’s removal, it can be restored when a project is officially “derugged”, which effectively means a change in management usually with the holder community’s approval.)

  • A substantial change to the assets, e.g., hash list, NFT images, project name, which indicates a departure from the original project that was initially reviewed or a failure to meet our content guidelines.

  • Evidence of questionable practices such as using bots to inflate social media following or the number of collection watchers, wash trading, or other means to artificially inflate trading volume or manipulate the market (e.g., floor price manipulation).

  • Reports from widely recognized publications and reputable media sources that the project funds are being used in unlawful or harmful ways and/or the project founders/team are involved in illegal or criminal activity.

Following a review of a collection’s badging status, we may also consider flagging the collection page or delisting the collection from our marketplace altogether. Additionally, collections that use imagery of, or similar to, the badge in a manner that may mislead the public about the collection’s badging status may also be delisted.

Badged collections are at the core of Magic Eden's commitment to authenticity and safety. By ensuring the legitimacy of listed collections, we strive to create a secure and enjoyable marketplace for all users.
