Troubleshooting Delayed Ethereum and Polygon Transaction Confirmations

Learn why your Ethereum and Polygon transactions are taking longer to confirm and discover solutions to common issues.

Updated over a week ago

While most Ethereum and Polygon transactions usually go through smoothly, there are times when high demand on the network can cause delays. In this article, we will explain why these delays occur and provide solutions to help you navigate such situations.

Transaction confirmation time

When demand is high on the Ethereum network, transaction confirmation times can be significantly longer than usual. Please note that Ethereum transactions generally take longer to confirm compared to Solana transactions. It is not uncommon to wait up to a minute for your transaction to confirm.

If your transaction has been pending for a few minutes and has not progressed, it is likely that you are submitting it during a period of high network demand. This usually indicates that you have not included a sufficient gas fee to process your transaction promptly.

Solutions for delayed transactions

If you find yourself in a situation where your transaction is stuck in a pending state, there are a couple of options you can consider:

Wait for the transaction to process

If your transaction is stuck pending, your primary option is patience. Ethereum transactions may experience delays during periods of high network demand. Waiting for congestion to subside often resolves the issue without further action. Keep an eye on your transaction status; it may eventually process successfully as network conditions improve

Speeding up your transaction

By adding more gas to your transaction, you can increase the chances of it being processed faster. However, keep in mind that this means paying a higher fee to push the transaction through.

Please note that only some wallets allow this functionality. You will find the option to speed up your transaction within the wallet, as shown in the screenshot below:

Cancelling your transaction

If you decide to cancel your transaction, you can explore the cancellation options available in your wallet view. Please refer to the screenshot above for reference. Keep in mind that cancelling a transaction is not always possible, especially if it has already been included in a block on the blockchain.

In this article, we've discussed the reasons behind delayed transaction confirmations on the Ethereum and Polygon networks. We've also provided solutions to help you navigate these situations, such as speeding up your transaction by adding gas or considering cancellation options.
