Discord safety, online security, scam prevention, NFT scams, web3 security

Updated over a year ago

As scammers continue to target individuals in the NFT space, it is crucial to take precautionary steps on all social media platforms, including Discord, to mitigate the risks of falling victim to scams. In this guide, we will outline important measures to help you stay safe and protect your assets from scammers on Discord.

Configuring Privacy Settings

To enhance your safety on Discord, it is essential to configure your privacy settings effectively. Follow these steps:

  • Navigate to user settings.

  • Click on Privacy & Safety.

  • Select the option that best suits your preferences for direct messaging. This will allow you to turn off direct messages by default across all servers.

Disabling Direct Messages from Specific Servers

You also have the option to turn off direct messages from users of specific servers. Follow these steps:

  • Right-click on the server icon of the Discord server you want to modify.

  • Click on Privacy Settings.

  • Choose whether you want to allow or disallow direct messages from users of the specific server.

Verifying User Identities

Always double-check the identity of users who claim to be staff members of a server. Follow these steps:

  • Right-click on a user's profile and copy their ID.

  • Verify the ID with the appropriate server to ensure it matches the intended individual.

  • If in doubt, reach out to the server's staff to confirm the identity.

Enabling 2-Factor Authentication

To add an extra layer of security to your Discord account, enable 2-Factor Authentication (2-FA). Here's how:

  • Access your user settings.

  • Click on My Account.

  • Scroll down to set up both an authentication app and SMS authentication.

  • Download your backup codes in case you are unable to access your 2-FA.

Avoiding Common Scams on Discord

Familiarize yourself with common scams used by scammers on Discord to protect yourself and your assets:

Moderator Impersonation

Be cautious of individuals pretending to be server moderators and requesting compromising information about your wallet or assets. Legitimate moderators will never ask for personal information, verification, or seed phrases publicly or privately.

Fake Sales

Exercise caution when engaging in peer-to-peer trades on Discord servers, as scammers may attempt to sell fake versions of collection NFTs. Be diligent and research thoroughly before making any trades.

Leaked Information

Beware of scammers phishing for private keys or passwords via DMs. Never disclose your private key, as it can grant access to your wallet and result in asset loss.

Protecting Against Web-Hook Scams

Recently, hackers have been compromising web-hooks of project's Discord servers and spamming wallet drainer links with announcements of live mints. To stay safe, follow these precautions:

  • Use your best judgment before clicking any links. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

  • Take a few seconds to step back and consult authorized team members in the server to verify the legitimacy of links and announcements.

  • Projects typically do not drop surprise mints or spam unannounced second collections. Rethink any offers that seem suspicious.

Important Reminders

  • Never share your seed phrase or send it via Discord DMs or servers.

  • No one on the ME team will DM you requesting asset transfers.

  • Avoid scanning QR codes to sign into your Discord account.

  • If a bot DMs you to verify or redirect to another site, double-check with the server admins to ensure it is the authentic bot before clicking anything.

  • Avoid screen sharing with random individuals on Discord.

  • When interacting with DMd links, always double-check the URL as scammers often change domains or add additional characters.

Discord is a valuable platform for connecting with the NFT community, but it's essential to prioritize your online safety. By following the recommended measures and staying vigilant, you can protect yourself from scammers and enjoy a secure Discord experience.

Remember, it's always better to be cautious and verify before engaging in any transactions or sharing sensitive information.
